New Mexico: Story and Photo
New Mexico provides a choice of two different alignments
of Route 66 from Santa Rosa
to Albuquerque. We chose the more direct post 1937 alignment that bypasses
Santa Fe.
In Albuquerque Jeff from the Nomads SC was
nice enough to provide us with a
free place to stay. He also provided me with a new centerstand (old
one broke somewhere
in Texas) and a smaller carb jet since my bike was not coping well
with the altitude. After
hearing many "moped" comments from rednecks, it was nice to meet up
with a fellow
scooterist.
In western New Mexico Route 66 goes through
Gallup where we stopped at the
historic El Rancho Hotel for lunch, and to get out of the rain. The
hotel was home to
many movie stars while filming western movies in the area. After finishing
my Ronald
Regan (bacon cheeseburger with a side of jelly beans), I noticed the
rain had stopped. We
rode off into the sunset, and into Arizona.
